...and then there's a three year hiatus. More like lacking the means to properly record and more importantly, archive said recorded material: First I was intrigued with the portable studio-quality microphone & hard drive, yet my fellow audiophile/sound engineers say that would not do your instrument any justice (without knowing nothing would further trashing my stenciled factory-made POS but heeey) so I have relented. Plus back then I have other grander ideas of music making and participation so this is placed on a backburner, soon to be forgotten.
Until costcos comes for the rescue. No I am not kidding: the scene in Family Guy where you have Lois/Meg trying to carry studio uprights from bulk is actually something you can get in wholesale big-box store chains.
The Casio PX-555R is weighted key full size digital piano with many bells and whistles but none too useful unless you want to get their propriety peripherals and while the polyphony (how many sounds can it simulate simultaneously) is low and speaker is noticeably weak, I often practiced with my headphones plugged in and its totally adequate as a low-to-mid range studio/at-home practice solution. I think we got it with a $200 discount back in 2007? or 8.
More importantly the Casio PX555R has both audio and midi out—both proved tremendously useful: I actually can connect the audio out directly into a PC and record its signal (I didn't care that much about noise and interference and that (the purity and authenticity of the signal) was never the point for me anyway; as long as it is recorded somewhat faithfully that would suffice.
And all of a sudden I realized I can actually do live recording of my improvisation again. I thus did.
